Day of the Child

The Day of the Child is an annual event that brings children and their parents together for fun activities and to learn of resources in the community that are available for families.

The event is sponsored by Community Action of Southeast Iowa and is held at Westland Mall in West Burlington, Iowa. The 23rd Day of the Child will be held on Sunday, March 27, 2011. The theme this year is "The Future is Green".

Approximately 24 nonprofit organizations set up booths at the event. Organizations provided information and resources for both children and parents in the form of arts, games, crafts and activities.

Day of the Child was the idea of event organizer Tamee DeCoursey and Child Care Resource & Referral Director, Cheryl Flaatten. The one day event brings around 700 parents and children per year to the mall to partake in the festivities that last for five hours.

Families learn the importance of proper nutrition, exercise, social activities and are made aware of the services and activities in the community that are available to them. The event has ideas and information on many things parents can do with their children. Parents and children show a lot of interest and excitement on the day of the event and continue to come to this worthwhile event every year.

To learn more about Day of the Child, please call 319-753-0193 and ask for Tamee Decoursey.
