Weatherization Program

Community Actionís Weatherization Program is funded by federal, state and local monies. The work done varies depending on the area, the amount of funding available, and the cost limits set by each funding source.

Weatherization work may include:
  • Insulating attics, sidewalls, banjoists and crawlspaces
  • Weatherstripping doors, windows and caulking
  • Venting attics
  • Minor foundation repairs

Depending on the location of a home to be weatherized, some utility companies will cover the cost of installing energy saving devices like low-flow shower heads, water heater covers, and high-efficiency light bulbs.

Community Actionís weatherization crews make a health and safety check for safe operation of gas appliances and clean and tune gas furnaces. Weatherization specialists may also provide energy saving tips and suggestions to clients.

Community Action of Southeast Iowa has a Weatherization Program that has had one of the highest energy cost savings per home in the state many times during the past ten years. During FY2012 the agency weatherized 184 homes. The Weatherization Program has also been busy repairing 45 homes for the elderly with funding from the local Area Agency on Aging. Repairs such as roofs, building ramps and making bathrooms accessible allowed senior citizens to remain in their homes. Other Weatherization activities include responding to referrals from the Department of Human Services to repair homes for Title 19 clients and using funding from local utility companies to provide high efficiency furnaces, water heaters, refrigerators, freezers and fluorescent lights.

To be eligible for Weatherization you must be at or below 200% of the Federal Poverty Guidelines.
